Is There Really a Difference?

If you've ever used the words REALTOR® and real estate agent interchangeably, don't worry, you aren't alone.

In fact, it's one of the most common misconceptions in real estate.

Recently, the National Association of REALTORS® began reminding professionals that the word REALTOR® isn't simply another way to describe someone in real estate. It's a protected designation that only members are permitted to use.

That got me thinking...

Does that difference actually matter to consumers?

What is a Real Estate Agent?

A real estate agent is someone who has completed the required education, passed the state licensing exam, and is licensed to help buyers and sellers with real estate transactions.

Without licensed agents, buying and selling homes would be much more difficult.

What Makes Someone a REALTOR®?

A REALTOR® is also a licensed real estate agent, but they've chosen to become a member of the National Association of REALTORS®.

Membership means agreeing to follow a Code of Ethics that places a strong emphasis on honesty, integrity, professionalism, and putting clients' interests first.

It's an additional professional commitment beyond simply holding a license.

Why Is NAR Talking About This?

Because REALTOR® is a registered trademark, not a generic job title.

Only members of the National Association of REALTORS® are allowed to use it, and recently, NAR has begun placing greater emphasis on protecting that designation.

Does It Matter?

Honestly...

That's a personal decision.

Some people simply want someone who is knowledgeable and experienced.

Others appreciate the additional ethical commitment that comes with working with a REALTOR®.

At the end of the day, most people are really looking for someone they trust.

I'm proud to call myself a REALTOR®, but more importantly, I hope people remember me for how I treat them.

Titles are meaningful, but trust is earned through communication, honesty, and showing up when it matters most.

Whether someone chooses to work with me or another professional, I hope they choose someone who genuinely puts their clients first.
