When the House Goes Quiet
What does an empty nest actually feel like?
It's not one big moment. It's a hundred small ones. No dirty dishes in the sink. Beds that stay made. No TV on in the next room, no half-heard conversations on the phone with friends. No goodnight, no good morning. Nobody warns you it's the little things that get you, not the empty bedroom itself, but the absence of all the small noises that used to fill the house without you even noticing it was there.
Is it normal to miss them this much?
Completely. I've told anyone who'd listen how much I missed my own two once they were gone. I texted every night just to say goodnight, called as much as they'd let me, and it still wasn't the same. There's a specific kind of grief in knowing you'll never all live under one roof again the way you did. It doesn't mean anything is wrong. It means the house did its job, and now it's asking something different of you.
"The house didn't get emptier. It just stopped needing to hold as much noise."
Does the feeling ever go away?
Not entirely, and I don't think it's supposed to. To this day, I'm happiest when both of my kids are home. I want to lock the doors and keep everyone right where they are. That feeling doesn't fade just because years pass. What changes is how you carry it, and eventually, what you decide to do with a house that's holding space for a version of your life that's already moved on.
Why does this matter when I'm thinking about moving?
Because so much of the moving conversation skips straight to logistics: square footage, stairs, market timing, without ever acknowledging that the quiet came first, long before any decision about the house itself. If you've been sitting in a house that feels too big, too quiet, or too full of a life that's changed, that feeling is worth naming honestly, the same way I eventually had to. It's part of why The Rooms We'll Always Remember resonated with so many of you: the memories don't leave when the people do.
