Every now and then, a moment stays with you long after the paperwork is signed and the moving truck has pulled away.

Over the years, I've had the privilege of helping many people through different seasons of life. Every move has its own story, but every so often, one reminds you that what you're really helping people find isn't just another house.

It's hope.

One particular morning has stayed with me for years.

 

When We Want Change...But Fear It at the Same Time

Years ago, I was working with a woman who was ready for a fresh start- or at least she wanted to be.

She had spent a long time talking about moving.

Every home we discussed seemed promising at first, but when it came time to schedule a showing, something always got in the way.

Sometimes it was timing.

Sometimes it was uncertainty.

Sometimes there was simply another reason to wait.

Looking back, I don't think she was avoiding the houses.

I think she was trying to find the courage to change her life.

And that's something many of us can relate to.

 

The Phone Call That Changed Everything

Then one morning, a home came on the market.

As I read through the details, I immediately thought of her.

It checked every box she had been searching for, including one that mattered more than anything else.

It was close to the water.

When I called that morning, I could hear the excitement in her voice.

"This sounds perfect," she said.

Then, almost immediately...

The reasons not to go began.

She had an appointment later that afternoon.

She wasn't sure she had enough time.

Maybe another house would come along.

I smiled and said,

"Perfect. I'll meet you there at 11."

Sometimes, we all need someone who believes we're ready before we do.

 

The End of the Driveway

When she arrived, I could see the hesitation.

She stepped out of her car and quickly reminded me she didn't have much time.

I told her that was perfectly fine.

"But before we go inside," I said, "I'd like you to follow me."

We walked quietly to the end of the driveway.

"Now look down the street."

At the very end was the ocean.

For a moment, neither of us said a word.

Then I watched something I'll never forget.

The tension left her shoulders.

She smiled.

A genuine smile.

The kind that only appears when someone can suddenly picture a different future.

We hadn't even stepped inside the house yet.

 

She Didn't Need Me to Save Her

 

She loved the home.

Everything about it felt right.

Before long, it became hers.

The day after she moved in, I called to see how she was settling in.

The voice that answered the phone sounded lighter than the one I had come to know over the previous months.

She told me she finally felt at peace.

We still keep in touch, and every time I visit, I see that same smile.

People sometimes tell me I changed their lives.

The truth is...

I didn't change hers.

She changed her own life the moment she decided to get out of the car and walk to the end of that driveway.

That morning taught me something I'll never forget.

Whether we're thinking about a move, a new career, retirement, or any major life change, fear often disguises itself as practical reasons to wait.

We tell ourselves the timing isn't right.

That next month will be easier.

That another opportunity will come along.

Sometimes that's true.

Sometimes it isn't.

But every once in a while, life quietly places an opportunity in front of us and simply asks us to take one small step.

Not because every step leads exactly where we expected.

But because we'll never know unless we're willing to show up.
