What Happens When One Spouse Wants to Move and the Other Doesn't

by Kim Dawson

When one spouse wants to move, and the other doesn't, it's rarely about the house itself; it's about what change represents. Here's how to talk it through without turning it into a standoff, and why there's no deadline on the decision.

Is it normal for one spouse to want to move and the other not to?

It's one of the conversations I have most often, and it rarely happens in my office. It happens in kitchens, over dinner, or in the car on the way home from visiting the grandkids. One of you is ready. The other isn't. I've sat across the table from couples married forty, fifty years, and this disagreement still catches them off guard. Neither of you is wrong; you're just standing in different places in the same season of life.

What questions help more than arguing about it?

"This isn't a negotiation to win. It's a decision to make together."

A few questions I've seen work better than "but why don't you want to move":

  • What specifically feels hard about staying? What specifically feels hard about leaving?
  • Is this about the house, or about what change represents right now?
  • Would a trial step help -visiting a few neighborhoods, touring a smaller home, without committing to anything?

Sometimes the resistant spouse isn't against moving. They're against feeling like the decision has already been made without them.

How long can we take to decide?

As long as you need. This is one of the few decisions in real estate that genuinely benefits from taking your time. You don't have to decide this month, or this year. What matters is that you're deciding together, at a pace that respects both of you.

What if we're just not ready yet?

That's a perfectly good place to be. If you're still working through whether moving makes sense at all, it might help to read How Do You Know It's Time to Move?  The "when" often needs to settle before the "how" does. I've had this exact conversation with couples in North Branford, Guilford, and Madison, and there's no single right timeline. When you are ready, whether that's next month or next year, I'm glad to walk through it with both of you, not just the one who's further along.

Navigating this conversation in your own home? I'd be glad to talk it through with both of you, no pressure, no timeline required.
